This reminds me of a funny part of SWEET DREAMS. The main character desperately wants a record player (it is 1970 or thereabouts) but his mother stubbornly refuses. He pretends to like a child idol named Heintje and even performs the song "Mama" to her and buys her the 45 for a birthday gift in hopes she'll have to buy a record player to use it.
