Born in Philadelphia in 1916, Bill Doggett was hired as pianist for The Ink Spots in 1942. He went on to greater popularity after taking up the Hammond organ in the early 1950s, winning Cash Box magazine's award for Best Rhythm and Blues Performer in 1957, '58 and '59.
